We have to acknowledge the receipt from Mr. Neville Newcomb, agent for the-Royal
Exchange Assurance of London, a copy of the handy sheet and desk almanacs issued by this corporation for the year 1902. ; The Cowthorpe oak is reputed to be the '-•i; rlargest " oak, and over 1600 years old, and * the branches cover half an acre. At the close ,of the seventeenth century, ' according ' to Evelyn's "Sylva," it was 78ft in circum- - " ' ference at the base of the trunk.
