SLY GROG-SELLING AND GAMBLING IN THE NORTH.

Within the last few months sly "grog-selling and gambling has been 1 carried oil to a great extent with the Maoris at a place called Bukautao, not many miles from Kaikohe, in. the Bay of Islands County. It appears, that Harry Hocy, who is the chief offending party, has been run-ring a billiard-saloon out iri that locality, where the offences were .-committed. At tho last Kaikohe Court, he Id on the-6th inst-.two cases of gambling were brought before the S.M., one against Harry Hoey and another against four Maoris, but as it was proved that the place in which the cards were played was not a public place the cases wfere dismissed. .» v Harry Hoey was then charged, i.i five different cases', with having sold whisky to Maoris on: September 27. Two of the charges .were dismissed and . three were withdrawn. < Harry Hoey: was again - charged with selling whisky to a Maori on October 5, and also to another on September, 14. In' the first case ; the. accused was con*, victed and fined £10 and costs £2 13;,- two weeks being allowed in which to pay, or in default one month's imprisonment, with hard labour in Mount Eden Gaol; and in the latter caso he was convicted and fined £5 and costs, two weeks : being allowed in which to pay, or in default one month's hard labour in Mount Eden Gaol. There were four charges against Tihepa Hoey. but no appearance of the accused.
