ENTERTAINMENTS AND MEETINGS.

DIX'S GAIETY COMPANY.

The popular comedian, Mi. Charles Failing, Miss Georgie Devoe and Mr. Ernest Brinkman are announced to appear for three more nights, the season of the accomplished Lingard Sisters being _ one night longer. The present, company is an exceptionally strong one, and the programme goes with a swing from start to finish. There will be a complete change to-morrow night. On Christmas night a special grand vocal and instrumental concert will bo given, in which Messrs. Pope and Sayles, Miss Jennie Opie and the full strength of the company will appear. On Boxing night— arrangement with Mr. Rickards—the Lenton trio, and " Murphy and Mack" will make their first appearance in New Zealand 'direct from America, together with a host of new faces and old favourites. Altogethei an exceptionally strong liolilay programme is promised at the City Hall.

NEWTON SCHOOLS COMMITTEE. - The ordinary monthly meeting of the Newton Schools ConimTctee took place in the Newton East school last evening, there being present: Messrs. G. Knight (treasurer), J. Peak, J. M. White, G. Baildon, G. J. Garland, R. James and T. W. Freeman. Mr. G. ' Knight presided. The headmasters' reports received consideration. The Newton East school closed the December, quarter with a roll; number of 755 and an' average attendance of 703. ' The Newton West school closed the quarter 'wpth a roll- number of 616 and an average attendance of 559. The schools are now closed for the Christmas holidays. During the evening Mr. Knight informed the meeting . that owing to his removing to the Mount Albert district to reside he would not be eligible to remain on the committee and his : resignation was accepted with regret. The committee spoke of the irreparable loss sustained by the untimely death of the late chairman, Mr. John Rosser. A letter was received from the City Schools Committee with reference to this. The members of the Newton Schools Committee referred 'to the sad : event with deep regret and are forwarding a letter of sincere condolence to the bereaved widow and family. On : the motion of Mr. J. M. White the committee was unanimous in the election of Mi. G. J. Garland as chairman. Mr. J. M. White was requested to accept the appointment of treasurer, and Messrs. D. R. Talbot and J. 0. Bawden were elected to fill.the vacancies on tho committee.

ONEHUNGA TRADESMEN'S ASSOCIATION.

A representative meeting of Onehunga tradespeople was held last night in the lodgeroom of the Public Hall. Mr. D. A. Gray occupied the chair. The Chairman stated that it had been decided at a, previous meeting to form a tradesmen's association, and a committee was appointed to draft rules. The present meeting was held to receive the committee's report. Mr. Geo. Moody read the recommendations of the committee, which consisted of a set of rules. After discussion these were adopted with but slight alteration. The following officers were elected for the first President, Mr. D. A. Gray; vice-presidents, Messrs. G. 11. Douglass and J. Glanfield; secretary and treasurer, Mr. George Moody; auditor, Mr J. W. Whyte; executive, Messrs. W. Kclsall, J. J. Bussell, P. Farrell, W. Watts,' F. Backhurst, IT. Prime and J. Laking. On i" motion of Mr. Glanfield it was agreed to forward the ' following resolution .to the Onehunga Borough Council: —"That this association respectfully, requests . the Council to urge the Government to appoint a third constable to Onehunga, believing as it docs that the present staff is quite inadequate for the protection of public safety, especially at night."

MUSICAL EVENING. A musical evening, tendered by the Yorkshire Society of Auckland to the Lancashire Society of Auckland, was held in the Odd lows' Hall, Cook-Street, last evening. There wall a very large gathering for the occasion, the hall being all too small to contain those who desired to take part in. the proceedings. Mr. J. Thornes, president of the Yorkshire Society, occupied the chair and opened the evening With an address of welcome to the guests. The following was the programme gone through, Miss Midgley acting as accompanist to the musical items: —Instrumental quartette. Misses Taylor and Midgley. Messrs. J. E. Taylor and J. West; song, "The Last Muster," Mi. C. Mayall; recitation, Miss L. Vause; song, Dream Voices," Miss J. Smith; song, "By the '•.Waters." Mr. W. Aspinall; speech, Mr. W. B. Lcyland; song, " Clang of the Wooden iShoon," Miss A. r Taylor; Lancashire reading. Mr. J. Torkington; song (with clarionet obligato), "Pack Clouds Away," Miss R. West; song (selected), Mr. .R. Noton; English concertina so"V "Should He Lipbraid," Mr. J. E. To for; character sketch, 1 Mr. J. Thornes; " God Save the King."

ONEHUNGA MUSICAL SOCIETY. The annual meeting of the Onehunga Musical Societv was held last night in the Foresters' Hall. Mr. J. Laking, vice-presi-dent, occupied the :hair.. Mr. E. L Gatland, secretary, read the . annual report, which stated that the year just closed had been fairly successful. The subscription list had been up t. the average. The report con-, cluded with a feeling reference to the loss sustained by the society through the death of their president, Mr. C. C. Fleming. The financial statement showed a debit balance of £2 12s. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. Officers for the ensuing year, were elected as follows: President, His Worship the Mayor (Mr. D. A. Sutherland;: vice-presidents. Dr. Payne, Canon Haseldon, Mr. J. E. Taylor and Mr. J. Laking; secretary, Mr. E. J. Gatland; treasurer, Mr. t .T. E. Kelsall; committee of management, : Misses Mulkcre, Brown, Harrison, Watkin, Mesdames Gatland, Scott, Messrs. E. Sutherland, and Higgins; conductor, Mr. E. J. Gatland. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded 1 to Mr. E. J. Gatlnnu, conductor. Miss Mulkere, pianist, and Miss Robertson, leader of the orchestra. . CONCERT AT ST. DAVID'S. There was a large attendance at St. David's newly-erected Parish Hall, Khyber Pass Road, last evening, when a concert was given on the occasion of.the opening of the hall. Instrumental selections were given by the Overton Orchestra, and a wellselec.tfcd vocal programme was 'carried out, the principal contributors beini, Mrs. J. W. Stewart, Misses Lambourne, A. Stevenson, and Harper, and Messrs. Charter, Wilson, Cousins, £nd Townshend, and D'Authercau.
