RATING ON UNIMPROVED VALUES.

CARRIED IN WELLINGTON. Wellington, November 14. A poll of the ratepayers was taken to-day on the proposal to apply the rating on unimproved values to city properties. There were 6700 voters on the roll, 2852 of whom voted—l26l for the proposal, and 591 against it. The system will come into operation next March. The fact that the poll on the rating on unimproved values was carried is proof that the forces of those who were fighting for the establishment of this principle of taxation were admirably organised, whilst on the other hand their opponents took very little interest in the matter. This is shown by the small vote recorded, though a newspaper war has been waged on the question, and leaflets in support of rating on unimproved values have been industriously circulated during the last few days. Public interest in the poll itself was almost lifeless. The polling places wore a forlorn appearance during the day.
