PENNY POSTAGE.
By the publication of the postal returns to September 30 we are put in possession of the particulars for the first six months of the financial year, and the results, as regards the effects of the concession of penny postage, are very interesting. The following figures represent the sales of stamps in the six months and the total post and telegraph receipts during the same period, with comparison of the corresponding period of the preceeding year, omitting shillings and pence : — Six Months to Sale of Total Post and September 50, Stamps. Telegraph Receipts. ~ 1900 ... £124,415 £220,301 5901 ... 102,054 211,988 Decrease £22,561 £8,313 The gross loss in postage stamps alone is £22,361 for the half year, against an estimated deficiency of £80,000 for the year; while the net decrease in the whole department is only £831o.—New Zealand Trade Review.
