THE NORTHERN COMPANY'S STEAMER GAIRLOGH.
After a service of nearly seventeen years in the coastal trade, the Northern Steamship Company's twin screw steamer Gairloeh has undergone a thorough overhaul at the hands of Messrs. George Fraser and Sons, at a cost of nearly £4000. The machinery has been taken out and undergone a thorough overhaul at Messrs. Fraser and Sons' foundry, and reinstated after new foundations had been laid and the hull reframed. Throughout the vessel has had her ironwork chipped and painted, and the accommodation for the travelling public renovated and improved, special attention being paid to the sanitary arrangements. The saloon has been repainted by Mr. Henderson and upholstered by Messrs. Winks and Hall. A preliminary trial trip was made by the engineer yesterday afternoon, Captain Haultain taking the vessel as far as Drunken Bay under a 901b pressure, the trip being made in something under two hours. Amongst those on board were Messrs. Ernest Ford, George Fraser (contractor), Geo. Gow (superintending engineer to the company), W. Laird (assistant superintendent engineer), and Thos. Simpson (Freezing Company). The results of the trial were most satisfactory, and there was an entire absence of defects on a searching inspection made by Mr. Laird. Mr. Thos. Markwick, chief steward of the s.s. Wakatere, catered for the visitors in a sumptuous manner. The steamer will undergo an official trial trip next week.
