.« — • Thb Auckland City Schools Committee met last night in the Wellesley-street school. Mr. G. Squirrell, chairman of the committee, piesided, and there were also present: -.-Di. Walker, Messrs. Galv, , ligher had been appointed pupil-teacher at ' i the Chapel-street school in place of Miss E. E. Kelly. ..■;=;-' .. > Voting for Members of Education. Board 31". Clarke, chairman of the Grafton School Committee, attended and urged the committee \to take action ■* against the present ■method of voting for members of the Board P|P|<rff Education,', pointing out that undei the present system of signed voting papers there wad no secrecy, as. every ?candidate ; could, f , through his scrutineers, find out how the I members of school committees had voted. He suggested that a letter bo sent to the r ,.\ Minister lor Education and to the city members of Parliament, urging a change in the method of,voting. Certain members of the Grafton committee, he said, refused to vote, because they objected to their votes being . mads known. Dr. Walker suggested that 'i ■Mr. Squirrell should convene a meeting of chairmen of the various committees to deal 1, , With the question, and make a representation to the Minister for Education. Mr. Squirrell , thought the returning officer should turn "... ' down the signatures on the voting papers before showing them to the scrutineers. Mr. McLeod said the whole question of the system of voting should be gone into, as .under j*)e present law the City Schools Committee ... had not the voting powei it ought to have in Proportion to the number ot scholars attend«g the city schools. The committee was unanimously of opinion that some action should be taken, and on the motion of Mr; faster, seconded by Dr. Walker, it was agreed that Mr. Squirrell call a meeting of chairmen of school committees in the Auck||||§i«nd district, the meeting to take immediate gpfiaotmn on the question of secrecy of the ballot *nd also to consider the question 01 proportional representation.
