The flood caused by the bursting of a, cloud and the breaking of a dam in Virginia did appalling damage in Elkhorn Valley. The fierce rush of the flood disinterred numerous bodies in Roll! Cemetery, thus causing an exaggerated idea as to the number of fatalities. The miners employed at Algonia, standing up to their waists in water, rescued twenty-three women and children as they were floating past. Several negro plunderers were shot'.
