Ewart S. Grogau writes in reply to " Iconoclast's" letter of June 15 on the subject of the single tax. Mr. A. Sanford refers to the question propounded by Mr. Upton, whether or not civilisation would have been advanced by the public ownership of land, and decides that if man had not developed the instinct of self-preservation he could never have, advanced in civilisation. "Ratepayer" replies to Mr. Kirkbride in respect of land value taxation. Thomas Henry Brown asks Mr. Fowlds or any of his single tax friends if any of them ever tried to make a home for themselves under difficulties like those he gives instances of. The cases lie cites are where deaths have occurred from the want of medical attendance, the parties living in the bush. Tn one ease Dr. Dalziel, of Pukekohe, «aid that young men should think seriously before they venture to bring a wife into a sparsely-settled bush district. It is those men who have taken such risks, and who have in many cases suffered, whom Mr. Fowlds proposes to rob. Mr. John Press, of the Bay of Islands, refer.-' to Mr. Fowlds - statement that the Liberal parry in England required to be reconstituted, and that the single tax would lis one of the principal planks ; n their platform. He says Mr. Fowlds has not a particle of evidence to show that any leaders of the party have ever giver, any countenance to the idea.
"Joskin" pities Mr. Fowlds in his desperate attempt to prove that black is white. Ho continues: years ago I came to New Zealand and invested £300 in a bit of laud. In what way have I received compensation from the Government? Has the Government ever given me a free ticket on the railway to Auckland? Has it ever taken my produce in for nothing? Has it ever even allowed me to trot my kerosene oil without charging me a swingeing duty until lately?
