THE PROPOSED SCOTTY-GATELOCK V.-. MATCH. . Aeteb the • running of the Cambria Handicap at the Takapuna Jockey Club's Spring Meeting, on Wednesday, Messrs. D. McLeod and D. McKinnon, owners respectively of Scotty and Gateloek, both of which horses competed in the race mentioned, entered into a discussion as to the relative merits of the two colts, and after considerable argument decided that the horses should :be pitted against one another for a sum of £1000 a-side (Mr. McLeod being the challenger). A deposit was then made, and the parties concerned "agreed to meet at Messrs. A. Buckland and Sons' yards on Thursday, at noon, for the purpose of putting the conditions in writing and depositing the sum of £500 each with Mr. A. Buckland, who, bymutual consent, was to be the stakeholder. Both owners attended at the Haymarket yesterday forenoon, at half-past eleven, accompanied by their solicitors — C. E. S. Gillies (of Gillies and Colbeck) representing Mr. D. McLeod, and Mr. R. H. Reid (of Messrs. Hesketh and Richmond) Mr. McKinnonand each with the amount of the stakes as fixed upon. The money was produced, but after considerable discussion, _ both parties, acting on the earnest solicitations of their numerous friends present, consented to the wagers being declared off, and the matter was then amicably settled. The pair then shook hands, and the proposed match, which had created considerable interest and talk in racing circles, was at an end.
