HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

ANNUAL ELECTION. The election of members of the Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board took place yesterday. Mr. T. Ussher acted as returning officer for all the local bodies concerned, except those in Manukau County, for whom Mr. S. Luke acted. A meeting of the City Council was held in the afternoon, the Mayor (Mr. D. Goldie) presiding-, to elect four members to act as representatives of the Council. There were present: Messrs. Graves Aickin, J. Court, Jas. Stichbury, T. Masefield. J. H. Hannan, Atkins, Salmon, Jamieson, Farrell, Grey, and Tudehope. The Mayo» expressed the hope that the representatives elected would look after the interests of the city, as it now paid an annual contribution of £3000. After some discussion the following were nominated: — Messrs. Aickin, Hannan, Stichbury, Court. Atkin, and Mr. Young Warren, an ex-mem-ber of the Council. After further discussion, Messrs. Aickin, Farrell, and Tudehope were excused on account of other duties. A ballot was then taken, with the result that Messrs. Jamieson, Court, Stichbury, and Young Warren were eleoted. Mr. Jamieson said that the eight-hour system would be brought up for introduction in March next at the hospital. It would involve an additional expenditure of £1000 a year. Ho would like to have an expression of opinion from the Council oh the matter. The Mayor said they should send their men to the Board not as delegates, but as representatives, to do their best as their judgment might dictate. Mr. Aickin said he thought that Mr. Jamioson had asked a very proper question, and one which should be answered, and on which they should express their opinion. Mr. Farrell preferred that the members should go as representatives rather than as delegates. They had to get the opinion of the medical staff, and other evidence before any decision could be come to. The Counoil was not in a position to oxpress any decided opinion. Mr. Stichbury called attention to the fact that the meeting was called to elect four members to the Charitable Aid Board, and that the discussion was irrelevant. The Council then adjourned. Messrs. George Joseph Garland and John Gordon were duly elected members to represent the boards of the road and town districts of the Manukau County and the Onehunga Borough Council.
