The manager of the New Whau Gold Mining Company's mine, at Thames, wired yesterday to the effect that whilst prospecting at No. 1 level a new hangingwall leader was intersected, six inches wide, with nice strong gold showing. The men have been put on to strip the leader. [»!' TELEGRAPH. — OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Wednesday. What may possibly prove to be an important discovery was made in this companys mine to-day, at the No. 1 intermediate; drive, above the Sons of Freedom level. The manager (Mr. James Jobe) was doing a little prospecting work in the crosscut leading to the hangingwall country of the Sons of Freedom reef, when he intersected a new leader about 6in in thickness, which showed strong dabs of coarse gold, and also nice ruby silver and other favourable mineral indications. Realising from the results met with that the leader was one well worthy of a trial, Mr. Jobe at once suspended the work that was proceeding upon the Sons of Freedom reef, and started the men to strip the new ore body with the view of getting a portion of it stripped for a proper breaking down. This work will occupy a day or two, as the country is of a firm character, although all that! can be desired from a gold-bearing point of view, so that a breaking down of the leader will probably not take place before Friday. Judging from the appearance of the leader where cut into to-day. and the amount of gold seen in the small quantity of ore broken out, there is good reason for believing that favourable results will be obtained when the breaking down takes place. The crushing of the ore recently obtained from the Sons of Freedom is still proceeding at the May Queen Hauraki Company's battery, and will probably not be completed before the latter end of next week. ALPHA G.M. CO. The No. 4 crosscut in the Alpha Gold Mining Company's mine, at Waitekauri, has been driven a further 14ft for the past week. The same good class of country still exists. The drive is now in a total of 1021 ft, WAIHI CONSOLS G.M. CO. The drive into the Martha Hill in the Waihi Consols Gold Mining Company's mine, at Waihi, is now in a total of 177 ft. The ground is rather harder than usual, but is still good reef-bearing country. The bore-hole is in boulder country, and it is hoped to get through this shortly, when | boring will commence.
