INSPECTION OF THE MAIN
TRUNK LINE.
AN ACCIDENT.
[BT TELEGRAPH.— BEPORTEB-I Poro-o-tarao, Wednesday. ,' The Minister for Public Works (the Hon. W. Hall-Jones) reached Taumaranui last night, and went three miles further on to the site of the bridge over the Wanganui River, which is a work of considerable importance, and will have to be tendered for soon. He came back to-day to the point of divergence of the two railways near Kawakawa, to which point the Main Trunk railway is expected to be finished by September, and proceeded along the Ohura Road inspecting the route of the proposed light railway to Stratford.
On the road between Taringamutu and Opotiki bridge, the wheel of the Minister's buggy went suddenly up to the axle in a deep hole. The Minister and Mr. Napier were thrown out, and the seat followed, striking Mr. Napier as he fell, cutting his ear slightly. The Minister turned a somersault, but landed on a grass bed unhurt. Messrs. Fowlds and Thompson were on the back seat, but managed to stick to the buggy. Fortunately for the Minister and Mr. Napier the accident occurred at a point where they had an easy fall. For the greater part of the distance the Ongamhe River runs immediately below the road with a steep decline.
