The following are the results of the competitions in the literary section of the Exhibition : — Class 3, essay (open), "Advantages and disadvantages of the existing as compared with the provincial form o. Government.'" (Judge, the Hon. C. C. Bowen) :— E. Carey. Wellington, gold medal, and Mayor's special prize ; M. Moscley, 'jumner, silver medal ; Miss Anderson, Springburn, certificate. Class 4, essay (open), "The probable effect upon the position of the colonies as parts of the British Empire, of their action in respect of the war in South Africa." (Judge, the Hon. W. Montgomery) ; J. C. Thompson, Southland, gold medal and special ; H. E. Carey, Wellington, silver medal ; S. Bilton, St. Alban's, certificate. Class 5, " Original poem on some subject connected with the history or legends of New Zealand,' (Judge, Professor Wall) : M. Nalder, Papamn, gold medal ; W. Alexander, Wellington, silver medal ; C. F. Salmond, A.shburton, certificate. Class 6, " Original papei on some subject connected with the history or legends of. New Zealand." (Judge, Mr. E. Tregear, : Rita Cracroft Wilson, Christchurch, gold medal ; E. Gibson. Auckland, silver medal ; D. Bates, Ohristchurch, certificate. Miss Agnes Mason, Auckland, secured a silver medal tor darning.net or muslin in the home industries' section. *
