' SUPREME COURT— Criminal Sittings. The criminal sittings were resumed on. Saturday morning, before His Honor Mr. Justice Conolly. - : - ,".-.'■" - • • S >,; A DOUBLE CHARGE. . James Nathan Troy and Hugh Storey were indicted that on August 7 last they broke and entered the dwelling-house of William Irwin, at Henderson, and stole 4&lb of kauri gum and 3s 6d in money. There was a second count- of receiving the same, well knowing it to bo dishonestly obtained. Storey, who was defended -. by Mr. Reed, pleaded not guilty, and Troy pleaded guilty. After a lengthy retirement the jury found Storey not guilty. His Honor, addressing Troy, said that thero was a long list of previous convictions against him, chiefly for assaults, and he noticed prisoner had served four years for robbery. He presumed that it was the old cause with prisoner, namely, drink, and there was apparently no chance- of his reforming. Prisoner was sentenced to 12 calendar months' hard labour. ALLEGED ASSAULT AND ROBBERY. Hugh Storey was then charged in conjunction.with Thomas Kennedy, with robbing Francis Brooke Wilkinson, at Newmarket, of the sum of £1 6s, at the same time assaulting him, so as to do actual bodily harm. Prisoners entered a plea of not guilty. The jury retired to consider the verdict at twenty minutes past five, and on returning at a quarter to ten p.m., the foreman announced that they wore unable to come tc any agreement. Hi« Honor then discharged the jury, remarking that the case would not be taken again before Tuesday next. POLICE COURT NEWS. Mr. H. W. Brabant, S.M., presided at the Police Court on Saturday. Drunkenness: A first offender was convicted and discharged, and another ordered to forfeit 5s from his bail. Thomas Fitzpatrick and John Hogan were each fined 20s or seven days' hard labour in default. Alleged Assault: On a charge of assaulting Annie Carr and Richard Carr a young man named Georgo Murphy was remanded till the 26fch inst!; and George Evans, on a charge of assaulting Edward Cluott, was remanded to the same date. Bail was allowed both accused in ono surety of £25. Mr. Colbeck appeared for the defence. Remanded: A charge against Nettie May Andrews of stealing a letter and forging the name Of E. Adams was further adjourned till Monday next. Prohibition Order: A prohibition order was made against Edward M. Coleman. Breach of By-laws: For leaving building material in Pollen-street, Grey Lynn, after sunset, without having a light placed thereon, John Rulo was fined 10s and costs.

Vagrancy: Two men named James Me Donnell and John Dunn pleaded not guilty to a charge of wandering abroad to solicit alms. The evidence showed that the men had gone into a shop and annoyed the proprietor till he gave them a sum of money to leave. McConnell was sentenced to three months' hard labour, and Dunn received a month's hard labour, to commence at the expiration of a. sentence he is now undergoing.
