WELLINGTON RACING CLUB'S • ; SPRING MEETING. SECOND DAY. [by telegraph.— association.] Wellington-, Saturday. | The concluding day's racing of the spring meeting was carried out under most favourable circumstances,, the weather being magnificent, the attendance well up to the average, and the racing of a very interesting character. The Pearce Handicap, the big event of the day, was a boil over, the public being very far astray in their calculations. Materoa, who was handy all the way, won comfortably at the finish, having little diffi culty in staving: off * the challenge ; which came from The Shannon in the straight. The colours of Tortulla, who was made a ,warm favourite, were prominent coming round the turn into the straight, but she fell away beaten before the straight was entered. A hostile demonstration of. a pronounced character was made against Frost, the winner of the November Hurdles. A protest for alleged inconsistent running on Thursday was entered, and this was upheld by the stewards. Frost was disqualified, and the totalisator paid out on the second horse, Hotu. The sum of £10,152 was put through the totalisator, as compared with. £6904- on the corresponding day of the last spring meeting. The total totalisator receipts for the meeting amounted to £20,146, or an increase of £4397 on the returns for the spring meeting of 1899. The detailed results are as follows : — PETONE HANDICAP of lOOsovs; second horse to receive lOsovs from the stake. One mile. 99—Mr. W. Davies' bo Melwood, 3yrs, by St. Ladybird, 7st (G.
