THE CYCLE LEAGUE.

TO THE EDITOR.Sir,— Cycle League deserves great credit for bringing the lamentable state of our streets so forcibly before .the Council. Councillors have eyes, but apparently they see not, as it is invariably outsiders who bring such matters before the public. A feiv weeks ago I was telling the engineer draughtsman that if a couple of men with picks and hammers were put upon the streets they could easily pick out and break the stones which cause so much jolting, tear and wear, thus making the streets more comfortable tc ride on; but that gentleman replied that it could not be done, as the engineer financier had no funds for the purpose. Besides using far too largo road metal, the so-called engineers have evidently the most hazy ideas whether the surface of the road should be convex or concave, painfully evident in Karangahope Road and other places, the concave formation being always wet, with a little burn running down the centre. Drenching the streets with hydrant and hose is another mistake, simply washing away the binding, while salt water from a cart has quite an opposite effect, lasting double the time. Mr. Murdoch McLean's letter in Wednesday's Herald is excellent reading, and the editorial thereon ditto. One thing we can congratulate ourselves upon is the splendid footpaths. 1 do not know who engineers them, but they are in excellent order except where neglected.l am, etc., Amicus.
