THE STATUARY OASTS IN THE MUSEUM.

TO TIIE EDITOR. Sir,—The destruction on Sunday last at the Museum of a valuable piece of statuary is a very regrettable circumstance. It might have been avoided, and that in future- similar losses may be prevented is my excuse for addressing you. It is now several years since the agitation and newspaper correspondence took "place which resulted in the opening; of the Museum on Sundays. Those who took an active paxt in that movement did no;, desire to deprive the caretaker of his Sunday's rest, and some 15 or 16 well-known Auckland residents offered to the Council of the institute their services to attend in twos or threes on Sundays and act as guardians ot the Museum's valuable contents. Their services were declined (whether with or without thanks I do not remember), on the ground that they "were not responsible.' Is the caretaker responsible for the present or utiy such damage? I now, Mr. Editor, 3uggeai that a similar offer shall bo again made to tho Council. Fifteen reliable men, who would give one Sunday in five for such a worthy purpose, will surely gladly offer their services. Were I now living in town, I should again cheerfully volunteer.—l am, etc., K.C. November 20, 1900.
