The No. 4 lever western crosscut, in the Alpha Gold Mining Company's mine, at Waitekauri, has been extended a further 14ft during the past week in the same class of countrv as heretofore. The opening up of the lode recently uncovered in the surface, has also been proceeded with. This reef carries a little gold throughout and the stone looks very promising, showing 2ft of crushing material. According to its strike, which is almost north and south, it should be met with in about 80ft of driving from the present face, if there is no alteration in its course. THAMES TALISMAN G.M. CO. Daring the past week the low level drive in the Thames Talisman Gold Mining Company's mine, at Thames, has been advanced 17ft 6in, making total driven by present contractors, 70ft 6in. The country is still a good channel of sandstone, and fair progress is being made. WELCOME JACK G.M. CO. The low level in the Welcome Jack Gold Mining Companv's mine, at Gumtown, has been extended a further 7ft ; total 236 ft. The lead shows an average width of 10m, and at a breakingdown on Saturday last was very good, almost even* stone bearing visible gold, some of which was very coarse. Numerous small flinty veins are crossing the face, making the country fairly tight. BARRIER REEFS G.M. CO. The chairman of the Sharebrokers' Association, Mr. John Mowbray, stated at the afternoon call yesterday that a rumour having got about'to the effect that a slip had occurred at the Barrier Reefs Gold Mining Companv's battery, at the Great Barrier, he had made inquiries into the matter, and ascertained that no damage of a serious nature had been done. IRON CAP G.M. CO. The directors of the Iron Cap Gold Mining Companv have obtained a report upon their property at Thames from Mr. Frank Roonev, a mine manager of repute, and the game has been embodied in a circular now being issued to shareholders. The report states that in the No. 1 level, on the Kaiser reef, which is in a total of 196 ft, the country is a kindly sandstone. The reef had pinched out here, but might again be picked up by extending the tunnel. The lode was estimated to average about 15in for the distance J driven, the quartz being of a kindly triable, nature, likely to carry fair gold. At JNo. 2 level, connected bv a winze with .No. i. level the lode was found to have increased in size, averaging fully 3ft in width. . It was solid arid well defined for a distance of 300 A westward drive on this lode was in over 60ft, and the latter gave every evidence of permanency, its prospect of Jiv-1 ing downward, and proving payable, being considered good. There were two other lodes disclosed in this level, the Seven-foot reef and the Harcourt reef. The former was a fine body of stone, with good walls, and the latter had been worked at higher i levels with satisfactory results. Two reefs were also got in another drive, carried into the north side of the hill. The first was! Aft in width, and gave fair assay values. As to the best position for a main working! shaft on the property, the report recommended this to be sunk on the north side of the creek, opposite to the No. 1 level, I and about 70ft distant, This would give about 70ft of driving from the shaft to cut j the Kaiser reef, and the 4ft reef mentioned would be about the same distance away on the opposite of the shaft, The site selected showed a kindly, close sandstone formation, which would, it was expected, be fairly free of water, and good for sinking. It was further recommended to sink the shaft to | 120 ft below No. 2 level before crosscutting j for the reef, and if the lode proved satis-j factory at that depth the company would be justified in erecting a crushing plant. There j would be sufficient water in the creek along- j side to work a small pumping plant, and motive power could be got from a small J water-wheel or turbine, as the creek has a | considerable fall. The company had a good battery site, with foundation for 20 stamps. The piles for boxes were set m concrete, and the timber was stated to be | quite sound. Small repairs were necessary j to the water-race. Ihe distance from mine I to battery was about 50 chains, and conditions were favourable for an aerial tramway. The- directors further obtained ad-1 vice as to two other points from Mr. Rooney, and have resolved to adopt his suggestions! in both instances. The first is to extend the low level westward from the winze, and follow up the lode, and the second to the main shaft at the place selected, and of the following dimensions: 12ft by sft, I in the clear, divided into three compartments, twe for winding, and one for pumping and ladderway. Thb circular further refers to the assays recently taken from Harcourt's reef, and states that the Sylvia j tailings, stacked upon the company's pro-1 perty, are being shipped tc Newcastle, and j j giving a profit of from £2 tc £3 per ton. !
