AN OVERDUE SHIP.

FIFTY DAYS OUT FROM SOUTH AUSTRALIA. Some anxiety is expressed regarding the safety of the ship Beacon Rock, that has been chartered by Mr. George H. Scales to load wool at Wellington for London (says the New Zealand Times). The vessel left Port Pirio (South Australia) on October 2, and so far as is known has not yet been reported, though the conditions that have prevailed for some weeks now between Tasmania and New Zealand have been most favourable, nearly every steamer and sailing vessel to arrive from the eastward at New Zealand ports having reported strong westerly and south-westerly winds. Being a stranger to this part of the world, and having—when the voyage commenced—plenty of time on his hands, her commander, Captain Hughes, would most probably come south about, and if this course has been taken, there has been any quantity of southerly winds to bring the vessel up the coast. The officers on the Rotomahana descried a large ship—apparently in ballastoff Cape Campbell last Friday week, about eight o'clock in the morning, but she was too far off for her identity to be established. If this was the Beacon Rock she must have been blown off the land a very long distance, for during the interval south-westerly winds have been experienced, which should have brought her within reporting area. The overdue vessel is a ship of 1789 tons net register, and is " stiffened" with 1200 tons of concentrates.
