SUPREME COURT.—Cbiminat, Sittings. (Before His Honor Mr. Justice Conolly.) The criminal sittings of the Supreme Court were continued yesterday. BREAKING AND KNTKEINO. ' , Two young men, named Thomas Jackson, aged 26, and George Augustus Vincent, aged 18, were convicted upon an indictment charcring them with having broken and en- ; tered a dwelling at Maungaturoto and stolen ono purse, one ring, and 17s 6d, and secondly with having- received the ring at Hikurangi knowing it to have been stolen. His Honor sentenced each prisoner to 18 months with hard labour. ACQUITTED. William Reyland, a young man, pleaded not guilty to having, on November, 1899, at Kawakawa, shot a pi& with intent to steal the carcase, and in explanation said ho shot the animal by mistake. His Honor, in summing up the case, said he was not sure that he should not direct tho jury to acquit the prisoner on tho ground that it had not been shown that he had intended to commit theft. The jury brought in a verdict of not guilty, and Reyland was discharged. THEVT. Hare Nekewhenua, a middle-aged native, was convicted of the theft of a watch and chain from tho dwelling of Henry Phillips, in Swanson-street. The watch had been recovered, but the chain was still missing, and His Honor deferred sentence in order to ice if the prisoner would give the police any assistance to looato the chain. Tho Court resumes at ten o'clock this morning. POLICE COURT NEWS. Mr. H. W. Brabant, S.M., presided at the Polico Court yesterday. Drunkenness: Two first offenders were convicted and discharged, and another was ordered to forfeit 10s from his bail. Robert Bateman, 1 against whom a prohibition order was made, was finod 10s, or 48 hours in default ; and Annie Dunn, 20s, or seven days. Maintenance: A number of maintenance cases were set down for hearing, but were either struck out for want of prosecution or adjourned. The hearing of a charge against Thomas John McManus, of failing to comply with an order of the Court, was adjourned till the 27th inst.
