CQ The enlargement of the Waihi Junction Gold Mining Company's shaft is now completed, and most of the water has been got rid of. The Worthington pump, which has been covered with water for the last 15 months, has been regained and found to be in perfect order. The drive at the 500 ft level is now being cleaned out, and the manager expects to be able to get into the workings this week. The water now flowing is being coped with easily, the pumps running only at 4£ strokes per minute, leaving an ample 1 margin of pumping power. In. the Waihi West section a contract has been let for the continuation of the shaft from the 150 ft level a further 100 ft, the intention being to ultimately sink to 350 ft. WAIEI CONSOLS G.M. CO. The drive north into the Martha Hill ir the Waihi Consols Gold Mining Company's mine, at Waihi, was extended 19ft during the past week, making the total distance 163 ft. The drive is still passing through a good class of country, with small stringers of quartz occasionally crossing the face. NEW WHAU G.M. CO. In the New Whau Gold Mining Company's mine, at the Thames, the newlycommenced rise, at the end of the ground over the intermediate drive, westward of No. 2 rise, is up 7ft. At this point a stops has been started on the course of the lode back towards No. 2 rise. So far no quartz has been broken from here, but the country encasing the lode is of a good class, interlaced with silica, mineral, and quartz veins. In the last named stringers gold is occasionally seen. The appearance of the country leads the manager to the supposition that a rich deposit of ore may be intersected anj day. Stoping operations from No. 2 rise westward have been proceeding as usual, the men having been engaged in breaking down the ore-body, which work is not yet completed. The reef maintains its former size and promising appearance, while the countn is of a similar description to that of the las week or so. IMPERIAL G.M. CO. The north drive in the Imperial Gold Miling Company's mine, at Karangahake. upm the course of No. 1 reef, has been advanced a further 10ft. total from crosscut 24ft. Tie reef is now the whole width of the drhe, and is composed of heavily mineralised oe, also carrying a good deal of silica. Average samples are being taken every 3ft or assay. PROGRESS-CASTLE ROCK G.M. CO. During the past week stoping on Reynolds' reef, north of the rise in the bottom level, Matawai section, has been continued in the Progress-Castle Rock Gold Minns; Company's mine, at Coromandel. Paws have also been formed and timbered up where required. Not very much of the reef has been broken down, but what was taken down showed gold, and the reef still looks very promising. Minister for Railways, on the grounds (1) that the area of the claim included a portion of the land vested in Her Majestv the Queen as a railway property; (2) that the granting of the claim would prejudicially affect the railway: and (3) that dredging" operation*, if carried out within the boundaries of the claim, would detrimentally affect the stability of the railway embankment. Mr. Clendon appeared for the applicant, and Mr. Miller for the objector. The application was withdrawn.

DREDGING. [BY telegraph.— ASSOCIATION.] Dunediu, Tuesday. As the Clyde Company's dredge Moa is unable to bottom some parts of "the claim, it was decided to-day to increase the capital to £8000 by the issue of 4000 shares, and to authorise the directors to purchase a suitable second-hand or construct a new dredge. At a meeting of shareholders of the West Matau claim it was decided to go into liquidation. The depth of ground is s« great as to make the prospect of payinj problematical.

The telegram from our Paeroa correspondent, headed " Coal for the Mines,' which appeared in our issue of Monday last, related to the Junction Wharf at Paeroa, and not to the mino mentioned.
