ECCLESIASTICAL.

MEMORIAL SERVICE. At the Newmarket Wesleyan Church last night a memorial service for the lato Mr. Geo. Kent v.": held, when the church was quite full. The rostrum was draped in black for the occasion. The Rev. J. T. Pinfold, who preached from Psalms xxxvii. 37 (" Mark the perfect man and behold the upright, for. the end of that man is. peace"), referred at the outset to the loss sustained by Newmarket through Mr. Kent's death. They had assembled to show their sympathy with the bereaved, and to acknowledge the work of tho man who had gene. Dealing with the word perfection, the preacher said that it indicated a reality after which we should all strive. Tho deceased had cultivated his higher nature, and had been unselfish, as was shown by his many kindly actions, and his patience in suffering. Mr. Kent had shown uprightness in his consistent work and conversation. There had never been a breath against his upright character, the secret of this being his early conversion. He had always shown great attention to his duties, both material and spiritual, and this was shown in the increase in his business and tho many positions lie had held in the church. ALEXANDRA PRIMITIVE METHODIST 'SUNDAY-SCHOOL ANNIVERSARY. The 51st anniversary of the Alexandrastreet Primitive Methodist Sunday-school was celebrated yesterday by special services in the Choral Hall. The Rev. W. Williams preached in the morning, on "What Manner of Child Shall This Bo?" the Rev. W. Ready in the afternoon, on "Daniel;" and in the evening the Rev. W. Lay cook preached on " Christian Manliness." The children were accommodated in the gallery, and sang special hymns in a very effective manner, under the conductorship ot Mr. A. Tremvith, Miss Ibbotson officiating at the organ. There were large congregations throughout, and in the evening the hall was crowded to excess. The annual soiree will be held in the Alex-andra-street schoolroom to-morrow evening, and the after-meeting in the church. CITY HALL.
