ATHLETIC NOTES.

PARNELL LAWN TENNIS AND CROQUET CLUBS.

The Parnell Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club opened their season on Saturday afternoon, and notwithstanding the very unpropitious weather, quite a number of members were present. At three o'clock Mr. H. C. Tewsley (vice-president), in the absence of the president (Mr. D. W. Duthie), took the chair, and said it was regrettable that such unfavourable weather should have interfered with the proceedings. He congratulated the club on the excellent progress made in improving the grounds, pavilion, and surroundings, and the pleasing appearance now presented must be most gratifying to the members who had worked so zealously for this end, and he considered it augured well for the present season proving a record one for the club. The lawns were now better than they had ever been, having been brought to this state of perfection under the supervision of the caretaker, Mr. A. Salter. He then declared the lawns open for play, and requested Mrs. S. Thome George (croquet) and Miss Mowbray (tennis) to throw the balls across the lawns, which was done amidst applause. A sumptuous tea, provided by the club's ladies, was dispensed in the pavilion, and much enjoyed by all. At a special general meeting held the same afternoon, to • discuss notices of motion to raise the sub--1 scriptions, it was carried, "That the subscriptions be not raised, but remain as at present." It was also resolved, " That a fee. of 5s in addition to subscription be charged members playing both croquet and tennis." A unanimous and hearty vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the proceedings. , A congratulatory feature of the opening : season is that a number of erstwhile members, who some time ago severed connection with the club, had now rejoined, and. including these, 21 new members have so far been added to the club's roll. PAPAROA LAWN TENNIS CLUB. Tho annual meeting of the club was held on November 10, when a credit balance of nearly £4- was recorded. The club is keeping up its strength. While a few are dropping out, others are joining. It is intended to erect a sort of pavilion, 15ft by Bft, provided with seats and a cupboard to hold tho gear. Mr. E. A. Despite the inclemency of the weather there was a fair attendance on tho green on Saturday afternoon, when the following games were played, viz.: — No. 1 Rink: Esam, Robins, Burns, Ross (skip), 24, v. Pooley, Ferguson, Hooper, ' Johnson (skip), 14. No. 2 Rink: Rendell, Shipherd (skip), 22, v. Stewart, J. R. M.' Owen (skip), 12. No. 3 Rink: R. Iloyte, Coe (skip), 22, v. C. Baker, Garland (skip), 15. Afternoon tea was provided by Mesdames Ross and Simpson. WAIHI CYCLING CLUB. The Waihi Cycling and Touring Club held their annual meeting in the clubroom, Waihi, on November 2. The balance-sheet submitted showed the finances to be in a satisfactory condition. The subscription for members was fixed at ss. The following officers were duly elected:—Patron, Mr. A. M. Myers; president, Mr. R. S. Ready; vice-presidents, Messrs. Wm. Corbett, W. Phillips, F. A. Saunders. D. McLean, W. E. Ryan, H. Priston, M. J. Stewart, E. 11. Pilling. C. P. Anderson, W. M. Russell, and Dr. Forbes; captain, Mr. Nat. Hall; deputy-captain. Mr. S. Paul; lion, secretary, Mr. A. Y. Ross; lion, treasurer, Mr. F. Stewart; Committee of Management, Messrs. E. Morgan, J. Smeaton, E. Joll, D. Coutts, and R. McMillan. It was decided that a letter be sent to the committee of the League of New Zealand Wheelmen, pointing out tho excessive charges imposed on bipycles, accompanied by riders, when travelling.
