A CUTTER WRECKED.
THE MASTER DROWNED.
The police authorities received information from Clevedon, Wairoa South, on Saturday, stating that the cutter Nancy had capsized between Tap,, and the Sandpit, and that the master (Richard Bloomfield) was supposed to be drowned. The mate (W. Gower) had got safely off from the cutter, and had reached Clevedon.
Yesterday Inspector Cullen received a message from Constable Foreman, of Fapakura stating that Bloomfield's body is supposed to be in the cabin of the cutter, which is sunk in 16ft of water in Kawakawa Bay. Gower, the man who was saved, is expected to reach Auckland to-day. Captain Couldrey. of the s.s. Hirere, which arrived from Wairoa South yesterday, reported to the police authorities that when coming tip to Auckland on Saturday afternoon he saw a mast sticking above water off Waitoa Point. The top of the mast was broken off. The place where the cutter is sunk is about 100 yds from the shore. Waitoa Point is between Tapn and the Sandspit, and is known as the inside passage to the Thames. Captain Couldrey went close to the mast, but could see nothing further. The Nancy was owned by Mr. Bryant, of Custom-street West, and was engaged in carrying shingle from the Sandspit tVAuckland. She was a wooden vessel of 22 tons register, and was built at Auckland in 1870.
Mr. Bryant proceeds down to the scene of the wreck in the s.s. Durham this morning, and Inspector Cullen has instructed Constable Foreman, of Papakura, to proceed to Wairoa to make further inquiries into the matter.
