PROPOSED SPECIAL SANITARY RATE.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— letter from "Ratepayer" in this morning's issue. Whilo I strongly advocated in your columns a special rate as being absolutely necessary, and the only effectual me- ! thod of dealing with refuse removal, I do not soe that it necessarily moans an increase in the rates, as, of course, the present charges for such work will be abolished, and in a large measure the special rate will be substitutional in the case of those now paying for removal, with this desideratum, that tho "other fellow" will have to pay his share. This he may selfishly object to, but I trust when polling day arrives there will bo a big majority on the side of so desirable a reform, even at the risk of materially increasing the rates. If not, tho more shamo for Auckland. Does "Batepayer" know that in desiring a continuance of the present method he is bolstering up an obsolete, dead and rotten system? Personally I have no recollection of any othor in my native city (Bristol) but a sanitary rate levied upon all ratepayers. Shall we literally continue to " stick in the mud" or shall wo go forward to cleanliness and health? Trusting the Council will carry Mr. Entrican's motion by a large majority.—l am, etc., Devonport, May 8, 1900. W. Skeates.
