THE ESCAPED PRISONERS.
A SENSATIONAL STORY.
London, May 9.
Whittington and Ford, the two Australian prisoners who escaped from Pretoria, declare that the British prisoners at Waterval suffer from insufficient sanitation and lack of medical attention. The food is scanty and the shelter inadequate. Half of the prisoners are suffering from low fever.
Whittington and Ford possessed a map of the country and small compasses. They narrowly escaped falling into the hands of patrol parties. They travelled at night, unless thick bush afforded cover in the day time, and waded many swamps and rivers, They suffered severely th. ough wet clothes and intensely cold nights. They eventually boarded at night a goods train for Delagoa Bay at Waterwalender siding amongst bales
of wool, covered by a twrpairftn.Kaffirs and railway officials searched the trucks at Komatipoort, but the. stowaways were not discovered. ■
