OPENING OF VOLKSRAAD.
KRUGER'S SPEECH.
Pretoria, May 9.
The Volksraad has opened. Laurel wreaths were placed on the four vacant seats.
President Kruger, in his opening address, acknowledged the loyal cooperation of the Free State, and expressed confidence in the future of the Afrikander nation, adding: "Our legislation and dealings with Britain in 1899 proved our pacific intentions. Now that war has occurred we will do everything to secure peace." The world's sympathies were with them, and their finances were able to bear the strain of the campaign, and the mines were flourishing. Later on the President remarked that if he were sent to St. Helena the Republican cause would still continue.
