AUCKLAND WEEKLY NEWS.

A MAGNIFICENT ISSUE.

SPECIAL VOLUNTEER NUMBER.

AUCKLAND DEFENCE FORCE

ILLUSTRATED.

THE WAR IN SOUTH AFRICA.

SIXTY HANDSOME PICTURES. This issue of the Auckland Weekly News forms one of the greatest volunteer numbers ever issued in New Zealand, and might well serve as an official guide to the numerous corps that defend the Northern capital and its environs.

There are no less than 23 large pictures devoted to illustrating corps and companies, besides groups of officers and portraits of the staff, Most of the companies were photographed specially for the Auckland Weekly News, by its own photographer, and have been reproduced so well that nearly every individual volunteer can be easily recognised. Such a complete illustration of Auckland's defence forces has never before been given, and this number will servo admirably to send abroad to show that, besides being able to send a large body of fullyequipped troops for service in South Africa, Auckland retains her full complement of men to defend her own shores. The volunteers themselves, and the friends of our volunteers, will value this particular issue of the Auckland Weekly News, and will recognise that no other publication has ever treated our defence forces in so complete or comprehensive a fashion. Besides the pictures of the various corps and their officers, there are others, illustrating the recent Easter volunteer encampments in Auckland and Poverty Bay.

The war in South Africa is well illustrated by a series of pictures showing the capture of a Boer convoy of 70 waggons by General French, during the march to Kimberley, a " pom-pom" gun taken from General Cronje at Paardeburg, a portrait of General Snyman, who commands Hie Boers investing Mafeking, and others. Our special correspondents with the New Zealand Contingents at the front send us some capital pictures. One group of convalescent New Zealanders includes the late Trooper Jenks. Our special with the Second Contingent supplies interesting snapshots of the distribution of bandoliers among the Second Contingent at Victoria West, and the men adjusting their bandoliers. Other pictures are: The trenches at Rnslin, also the kopjes where the battle was fought; the military bridge over the Modder River, built by the Royal Engineers in nine hours, The Second New Zealand Contingent at Victoria West, waiting ordera to advance, and Trooper Nelson doing sentry-go near Carnarvon, show what our Now Zealand boys of the Second Contingent are doing in the western part of Cape Colony. The officers and non-coms, of the Third New Zealand Contingent, together with one or two representatives of the Fourth Contingent, are given.

The Cambridge Chrysanthemum Show is illustrated by a handsome full-page picture, showing the lending prize collections, and portraits of tho officials connected with the show.

A group of pupils of the St. Stephen's Native School is shown, taken during the entortainmont of these young people by Lord Ranfurly at Government House.

Dr. Alice Woodward, and the nurses who bravely volunteered to serve in the infectious disease hospital when it was thought that tho plague had visited Auckland, are shown, as well as some of the buildings which wero sacrificed to the plague scare.

The grand stand at the Avondale races, crowded with eager spectators of the Autumn Handicap, and a luncheon party on the Avondale course, add to the lisb of interesting pictures, and make this issue of tho Auckland Wkbkly News a number well worth purchasing. The Auckland Wekkly 'News is now on sale by 'all agents and runners, and copies should bo obtained early, in order to avoid disappointment.
