THE WATER FAMINE.

TO THE EDITOR, Sir,—ln connection' with tlio "nnnunl" water famino, I should like to point out that the merchants and othors have patiently borne the loss of money and timo caused by tlio lifts being out off, but it would suroly have boon possible to permit the use of thoso for some short period, oven onco a fortnight. This would allow, at least, tho accumulated hoavy goods to bo romovod and so savo great loss and inoonvenionco. It appears to mo there nro two questions to bo fuskod of the municipal authorities: First, why havo tho interests of tho merchants, etc., been entirely overlooked, and absolutely no concession allowed them ? And secondly, has tho water boon cut off at the timber mills and other works in which their own interests aro at stake? It stnkos me forcibly, nnd I think, sir, you will agree with mo that no favour of this kind should bo shown. If it was absolutely necessary to causo this trouble, then all should suffer alike.-I am, etc., MERCHANT. Auckland, May 1, 1000.
