OBJECTION TO THE TRAMWAY SCHEME.
PETITION FROM RATEPAYERS. A petition from a number of ratepayers and burgesses, protesting against the City Council granting a monopoly of the electric trams, and demanding a poll in terms of the Tramways Act, 1894, has been lodged with His Worship the Mayor, Mr. David Goldie. It reads as follows:—"We, the undersigned property-owners, ratepayers, and burgesse? of the City of Auckland, give you notice that we are opposed to the granting of a monopoly to construct electric tramways in the city to Mr. W. G. Bingham, as per deed and plan advertised by you and we hereby demand a poll in the terms of the Tramways Act, 1894." The petition has been signed by 139 owners, 144 ratepayers, and 253 burgesses, making a total of 536. After the list was gone through by the Council officials, 26 names were struck out, for various reasons, some persons having signed twice, others not being on the roll. It is a question whether burgesses are allowed to have a voice in this matter, and upon this point His Worship the Mayor is taking legal advice.
