Approaching the home turn the leaders fell back, and Scorn, Dewey, Gnullo, and Cocos took charge, coming round it-he- bond together, closely pressed by Mora, La Carabine, and Ballistite. Scorn led into the straight, but immediately fell back, leaving Gauleon and Dewey in charge at the distance post. THE CAULFIELD CUP WINNER. Dewey, who on Saturday last had his name em oiled as a winner of the Caulfield Cup, was bred by his'owner, Mr. T. Payten, who for many years has occupied a front place in the ranks of Australian trainers. Prior to scoring his success in tho Caulfield Cup, Daivey had demonstrated that lie was possessed of pace, -for .at the ' A.J.C. Spring j Meeting last' month he put down all the best weMit-for-age talent in the Spring ■ Stakes, on which occasion he was timed to run the mile and a-lrnlf in 2ni.'36i. Hisi subsequent defeat in the Metropolitan Handicap, under fat 121b dimmed his'' Spring Stakes .victory but none, .the less Dewey had . been in good repute foi the Caulfield Cup.during the, /

past few weeks, and the New South Wales division have no doubt profited largely by his victory. The victory of Dewey marks the fourth oocasion on which a three-year-old 'if* 01 ? th Caulfield Cup, Little Jack, Waterfall, and Amberite being the other three of that age to score in that race. THE CAULFIELD GUINEAS. From Sydney papers to hand by the Talv.ne we extract the following regarding tho contest for the Caulfield Guineas:—Scorn led the procession, and the son of Bill of Portland looked fit to rail for a kingdom. Parthian, who has shown marked improvement since his last appearance at Randwick, came next, followed by Promontory and Lancaster, the latter of whom bore evidence of a thorough preparation. Tremarden was ill good fettle, and Gunga Din, tho South Australian Derby winner, also looked well. Backers freely 'accepted even money about Scorn, and 5 to 2 about Lancaster, but expansive odds could be had about the others, of whom Promontory had the mast friends. Tremarden had all the worst of the start, but as 60011 as he got on his legs he dashed through, and, joining Promontory, the pair, drawing clear, soon placed a good gap of daylight between themselves and their immediate followers, tho most prominent of whom were the favourite and Lancaster, while at an early stage Gunga Din had tailed off last. Promontory, who had a slight, advantage of 'Promnrden all the way, was first into the straight, with the latter on his girths, while about four lengths behind the pair Scorn and Lancaster were racing on terms. Morrison, who had hitherto been taking it easily, called upon the favourite at the distance, and the colt, lespending generously, was gradually overhauling the leaders; but Finley kept Tremarden going, and landed him past the post a comfortable winner, leaving Scorn to beat the wcaried-out Promontory for second/ place. Parthian and Lancaster finished together behind the placed horses, while Gunga Din and Condiment at a respectable distance were last. THE CAMBRIDGESHIRE STAKED. By Telegrapb.-Pross Aasociation.-Copyright. London, October 20.' For (lie Cambridgeshire Stakes, Mazeppa is favourite at 9 to 1, while i'J to 1 is on offer against Oban, and 14 to 1 Ercildoune. RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES. [ill- TELEGRAPH.PRESS ASSOCIATION.} Christchuuch, Saturdiy. During the week the New Zealand CIP candidates Malatua, Djin-Djin, Mis-? Delava', Huku, and Pitch and Toss naro been kept busy. The latter, who raced lit GeraMii e on Thursday, and was beatm by Double Event and The Spinner in ibe chief race, wts on the course this morning i.ono the wrso for her efforts there, where tho weight was all against her. Sant Ilario and SkobelofF and others of Mr. Stead's team were oil ll.i course, but they only performed walking exercise. Sant Ilario was pliol with brashoes. Malatua, assisted by Peerage and another, ran a mile and a-lialf on tho plough (which was never faster) in 2m. 44s. t DjinDjin and Miss Delaval covered a mile and a-quarter, finishing together in 2in. 14-js., which is a little better than Thursday's gallop between the same pair; and a gallop in which Peerage and Malatua woro associated on the same morning. Huku yesterday covered the same distanco alosa in 2m. 17js. He is a lazy worker at any time. In Auckland Seahorse and Sir Lancelot are equal favourites for the New Zealand Cup at 5 to 1. The first two-year-old race of the season in Now South Wales was run on the 19th inst., and was won by Conaro, a son of the New Zealand-bred sire Medallion.
