PARLIAMENTARY NEWS.
♦ [BY TELEGRAPH.— CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Saturday. SUPPLEMENTARY ESTIMATES. Tire greatest- dissatisfaction has been expressed concerning the Supplementary Estimates. It was at first hoped that owing to the late stage of the session these Estimates would pass through with but little discussion, but when they made their appearance at about three o'clock on Saturday morning the Opposition mid others were so surprised at the large total voted, the way in which it was allocated, and some of the individual items, that they declined to go on, and insisted on adjourning after the first item had been passed, When the Ho'ise met again later on in 'the day Captain Russell announced that had it been earlier in the session he would have moved the following hostile amendment. "That in the opinion of this ! House the Government should withdraw the Supplementary Estimates with a view to their reduction, and a better allocation of the various amounts." The Leader of the Opposition added that as the House did not wish p. lengthy discussion on a hostile motion at this stage, he and his friends would content themselves with a careful discussion of the various items. The debate was kept up till midnicht, when the House adjourned till eleven o'clock on Monday morning. Much as they would have liked to bring the session to a close on Saturday night the Opposition feel that the business of the country is the first consideration, and that some of the votes on the Supplementary Estimates ought not to \>i rushed through without protest.
