NEWS FROM COUNTRY DISTRICTS.

[FROM OCT. OWN CORRESPONDENTS.] ' CAMBRIDGE. A LAHGB and influential meeting of settlor! I was held in the Cambridge West Public Hall, F on the 17th inst., to consider the question of the unsatisfactory condition of the Cambridge i bridge, when the following resolutions were I unanimously carried :-"l. That this meeting ' considers it unwise to spend £500 011 tho , Cambridge bridge in its present condition 1 and position. 2. That this meeting request i the County Council to ask the Government to send an engineer to survey and estimate 1 cost of new bridge from Victoria-street, Cam- • bridge Bast, to Pope Terrace, Cambridge i West. 3. That on receiving the report of • the engineer 011 the proposed new bridge, . the Waipu County Council request the Mayor of the Borough of Cambridge to call a. puhlio meeting of settlers to further consider th/« question. 4. That the resolutions passed a* this meeting be forwarded to the County Council, with a request that copies of the same be- at once Bent to the Minister for Public Works and the members for the Waikato and Bay of Plenty districts. In discussing the above resolutions, it was pointed out that already £200 had been spent in repairs on the old bridge, and that the Government ent gineer (Mr. Hursthouse) had recommended a further expenditure of £500. to make tha bridge safe. The County Council had applied for the £500, but the settlers were of opinion that this expenditure on repairs to a decayed and unsuitable structure would be waste of money, first, because it would talso a much larger sum to make the old bridge safe for heavy traffic, and second, because it was in a, most unsuitable position for the majority of the settlers. The suggestion to I raise a loan under the.Loans to Public Bodies • Act was therefore unanimously received, and ' the foregoing initiatory resolutions carried without dissent. It has been estimated that a rate of l-16th of a, penny would cover a loan . of £3000, thus, in all probability, a&d rate would meet the cost of a new iron bridge in - a suitable position. ; OHAUPO.
