LIGHTING OF THE MOUNT EDEN DISTRICT.
MEETING OF RATEPAYERS. :'£§ A public meeting of ratepayers and residents of the Mount Eden Road Board district, convened by the Road Board, was held at £ St. Barnabas' Parish Hall, Mount Eden, last evening, for the purpose of considering thg question of the lighting of the thoroughfares of the district. Mr. H. Hurst, chairman of the Hoard, presided. In accordance ?' with a previous resolution of the ratepayer J® instructing the Board to prepare statement!' setting forth the comparative cost of lighting v' with gas and electricity, and to issue the lame in circular form in order that ratepayers might '■'¥ be in a position to better consider as fa the form of lighting most desirable, the necessary information has been in the hands '! of the ratepayor; for somo tinio past, th» \ details being as under: — v> 1. Gas Lighting: Cost of plant for 8(1 street lamps, £300; annual cost of lighting J the, same (80 lamps) and maintenance, £320; interest and sinking fund, 6 per cent., £18. ' 2. Electric Lighting of Roads Only: Cos) of plant for 80 street lamps of SO candle, power, £1800; annual working expenses, £380; interest and sinking fund, 6 per cent' £103. 3. Electric Lighting of Roads and Houses: Cost of plant for 100 street lamps of 50 candle- ! power and about 1000 lights of 16 candlepower for private houses,' £6000; annual ' working expenses, £1340; interest and sinking fund on plant at 6 per cent, on £6000 ' £360. Revenue Account for Above: Charges for street lighting, say, £350; estimated charges for lighting 1000 lamps (if taken), say, £1643; deduct working expenses and interest as above, £1700; net estimated revenue, £293. Mr. Fenn (of Messrs. Chambers and Son) was present, and explained his scheme with regard to lighting by electricity, and also answered questions asked by various ratepayers. ■ The following resolution was proposed by . Mr. Hill, seconded by Mr. Gunson, and earned:—"That this meeting is of opinion; that the district should be lighted by gas according to the plan submitted at a pre. vious meeting, but providing 100 lamps in- ', stead of 80 as originally proposed." A vote of thanks was given to the sub. committee of the Board, who had charge of the matter, and also to Mr. Fenn for the information given by him.
