A FIRE ALARM.

A very successful trial of Grinnell's sprinkler and May's fire annunciator and a demonstration of the alertness of fire brigades was given to-day. Two of the former have been fitted up in Sargood, Son, and Ewen's large factory as a protection against fire, and tests were made in the presence of a large number of those interested. Methylated spirits were thrown on some embers. Flames shot up to the ceiling. In three seconds May's annunciator gave the alarm, in 31 seconds the sprinkler was at work, and in 56£ seconds a. gong in the yard rang out that the members of the fire brigade were at the station. Within 35 seconds the men had put on their uniforms, and had left the station with the gear, and within two minutes 37j seconds they had reached the scene of the fire, and in three minutes four seconds from the first signal the brigade had hose coupled and ready. All the alarms were given mechanically.
