Mb. and Mrs. T. F. Citceseman' were passengers to Rarotonga by the Ovalau last night. Mr. W. Johnson, late of the s.s. Southern Cross, has been appointed chief steward of the s.s. Ovalau. Tho Dunedin Star states that amongst those to be recommended ior appointment to tha Legislative Council is Mr. Hugh Gonrley. The members of the Northern Club have issued invitations for a ball to be given in the Club on May 31, to His Excellency tho Governor and the Countess of Ranfurly. Mr. Victor Grace Day. solicitor, who lias been carrying on business at the Thames during the past three years, has been appointed as land registrar and examiner of titles at Hokitika, and purposes leaving for that district in a few days. Mr. McKay, of Newmarket school, has been selected by the committee for the position of first assistant of the Grafton Road school, in the place of Mr. A. F. Burton, who has been appointed tc the To Aroha school. The Rev. C. H. Yatman lias sent word to the Sydney Y.M.C.A. that he is leaving Hongkong for Australia, and will commence a mission in Sydney at the end of this month, in connection with that institution. He expects to revisit New Zealand about the end of the year. Mr. F. Sloman, clerk in the Auckland office of the A.M.I'. Society, who is leaving for Wellington, was yesterday presented with a travelling bag, suitably inscribed, on behalf of the office. Mr. C. Hemeiy, district secretary, made the presentation, and Mr. Sloinan briefly acknowledged the gift. He was also presented with a large photo, engraving of the office staff. Mr. Sloman was a prominent member of the Grafton Association Football Club, and is alsc an enthusiastic cricketer. Yesterday evening Mr. Peter Mackie. of the lithographic department of the New Zealand Herald, who has been 20 years in the service of the firm, was presented by his fellow workmen with r handsome marble clock, on his approaching marriage to Miss Rebecca Thomson, formerly in the same department. The clock bore a silver plate, with suitable inscription engraved thereon. Mr. Cobb made the presentation in a few appropriate remarks. .Mr. Mackie acknowledged the gift on behalf or his intended wife and himself, and thanked his comrades tor their manifestation., of goodwill.
