INTERESTING EVIDENCE. [BY telegraph.— ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Wednesday. The charges against Captains Von Schoen and Jones, in connection with the issue of marine certificates, will be investigated 011 Thursday.

Whilst Riving evidence against Captain Allman at the Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, Georgo Allport, chief clerk in the Marine Department, in reply In Mr. Skerrett, said the defendant gave Jones permission to go up for the masters' examination. It was an official letter, sent to the collector, sittned bv witness, and written by authority of tho Minister in charge of the Department. Mr. Skerrett: All! I thought so. Is the Minister in charge of the Department subptEoaed for the Crown? (A pause.) "ell, lie ought lo he. (Laughter.) _ . John Hutohoson, M.H.R., in giving tin evidence, said there was as much peculiarity in dispensing with the service qualifications as ill doing without the mate's certificate. Mr. Skerrett: That was done by order of the Minister (Mr. Hall-Jones), but I suppose " the king can do no wrong." What do you think about it, Mr. Hutelieson? The witness' answer was a smile, and Mr. Skorrett also smiling said, "Never mind; it doesn't matter." Mr. Kenny, 8.M., said lie thought lie should draw attention to a provision iu the regulations which gave the Department power to give special consideration in some eases. Mr. Skerrett: That refers only to sea ser-vice-that and the possession of certificates matters. , , „ . Mr. Cully (to witness): Assuming that there was power to dispense with qualifications under special circumstances; you canno'. say whether it was rightly oxereised in this ease or not. , .
