MR. VALLE AND THE RAILWAY DEPARTMENT.

[BY TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Monday. Referring to the rejection by the Council of Mr. McCullough's motion, that the Petitions Committee take the evidence of Mr. Vaile, the Post states:"This result, regrettable in any case, becomes more so in the light of a letter now before us, recently addressed by Mr. Vaile to the chairman of the Railway Committee of the House. This letter makes such grave charges jagainst some of the Departmental witnesses who were examined before the committee of 1886, that it seems to us that Mr Vaile should be required to prove his statements before a Parliamentary Committee, or be for ever discredited. Mr. Vaile is now here. The Minister for Railways can give him an opportunity to prove his case or discredit himself for ever. It is -i fair issue. Will Mr. Cadman accept the challenge, or, by avoid ance of it, admit the justice of the charge/.
