Ultimately on April 27, 1896, Sir John Bridge, of Bow-street, went down to Bournemouth to examine into the merits of the French demands for extradition, and the extraordinary course of procedure adopted 'was that of conducting the proceedings at the bedside of the accused. Sir John Bridge described the scene as the saddest he had ever witnessed. Sir John, after an adjourned inquiry at Bow-street, in the absence of Dr Hera, 'declared that no grounds for extradition existed, and that the doctor was a free man. A change in Dr. 'Hera's condition occurred about three months ago. Serious complications arose, and lie became rapidly worse, sinking gradually. He passed away peacefully, the members of his family at home being present at his bedside. Dr. Here, who was born in 18*15, leaves a widow, one son, and five daughters. He was 52 years of age. The direct cause, of death was angina pectoris, but the secondary cause was failure of the heart's action, caused through mental worry.
