Squads of recruits to 10 various companies were drilled by the non-commissioned officers of tho Victoria Rifles. t The Martini-Enfield rifles, to be served out to tho Auckland volunteers, have arrived, and e . ®5° re .d at 16 Drill Hall, preparatory to distribution. . ' THE PONSONBY NAVALS' CUP. The competition for the JPonsonby Naval u>rps handsome cup was continued on Mount Men Range on Saturday afternoon, when the final stages were completed, resulting, as anticipated, m a very eloso finish, only one point separatng the first and second men. shooting was commenced at the 500vds range just as a drizzling rain started, and a fog which gathered on the mountain partly obscured tho targets at limes, the firing being therefore rendered very difficult, though some good scores were made, more particularly in tho case of Ist class P.O. G. E. Spinley, who put on 45 points out of a possible 50, his mis being two magpies, one inner, and seven bull s-oyes. C.P.O. J. Spinley (41), and winner F. Martin (40) were responsible for tho next best scores. By tho time the 600 yds rango was commenced, tho wind had increased m force, the fog settled lower, and with these disadvantages, and tho rain, only the outline of the target would be well defined, good shooting being thus impossible. G. Spinley headed the list with 33, F. Martin camo second with 32, J. Spinley third, 27; and C. A. Willis, with 25, fourth, these being the only scores worthy of mention, hut must, however, bo considered good in the face of tho obstacles which the competitors had to contend against. The appointed scores show that G. E. Spinley succeeded in again winning tho cup, which makes the third year in succession, the trophy thus becoming his own property:— Karnes. 500 yds. 600 yds. Total.
