SUPPOSED SUICIDE.
"ROUGH ON RATS" AGAIN. . Yesterday evening Sergeant Kelly received information from Korthcote, that Mr, Grant, a clerk in, the employ of Macklo'w Brothers, saw-millers, Mechanic's Bay, was supposed to have poisoned himself at his residence, N.orthcote, and requesting that a medical man might be sent lover. Dr. Walker was called in and loft shortly after six o'clock, arriving at Mr. Grant's residence, opposite the .Northcote Hotel, about a quarter to wven o'clock, Grant was thou alive, but. unconscious. The neighbours had been using emetics until the arrival of the doctor. Every effort-was made to save Grant's ,life but in vain, as he fell into a state of collapse. It appears that Mrs. Grant left a week ago to pay a visit to her mother at Hawera, and in the interval Grant had been getting his meals at the hotel. - He had not been at work since Thursday last, and on Sunday morning be had his breakfast, since which time he was not seen. Some of his neighbours went to his residence yesterday afternoon, not seeing him about, in order to ascertain how he was. It was then discovered that he had apparently taken " Rough-on-rats," as a tumbler was found on the table with, it is stated, some 'of that compound in it. A post-mortem will be held to-day, which will throw, light upon that point. Deceased had a nice-home, with every social comfort, and the motive which led to the act is not known, but may probably come out at the inquest, which will be held to-day by Dr. Philson, coroner.' Deceased was about 30 years of age.
