POLICE COURT.—Monday. [Before Mr. H. W. Brabant, S.M.] Drunkenness.—John McQarry was fined 20, with the option of Beven days, for having been drunk and disorderly in Queen-street on Saturday. George A. Farmer wai fined 20s for drnnkenuees, and » like sum for having damaged Constable Potter'i ahako. The accused was also ordered to pay the amount of the damage done. William P. Adams, a second offender, was fined 10s with the option of 48 hours, and four first offenders were dealt with in the usual manner. Theft.—Edmund Burke was charged that on April 20th lie did steal from the bar of the Waverley Hotel, the turn of 18i 9d, the property of Jamei Mcßae. Mr. Cotter appeared for the accused, and pleaded guilty. Counsel said hit client was treating some friends in the Waverley Hotel, and had in his hand a coin supposed to be a sovereign, which one of the men with him had handed to him. The barmaid, thinking he wanted change, put down LBa 9d on the counter without receiving the coin, which she evidently took for a sovereign. Burke picked up the money and left the hotel. Mr. Cotter understood from hi) client that he afterwards gave the change to the man who handed him the coin. Counsel said Burke was in liquor at the time, otherwise it might not have happened. His Worship imposed \ sentence of one month's imprisonment with hard labour. A Vagrant.—Johanua Barrett was sent to gaol for three months upon a charge of having no visible means of support. Discharged. — Arthur Haliey, charged with theft, was discharged as the prosecution did not wish to offer any evidence. Mr. Napier appeared for the proseoutrix.
