SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTIONS.

The annual meetingi of householders for the election of school committees for the Auckland Educational District were held yesterday evening. The following are reports of the meetings :— CITY. The meeting for the election of the City Schools Committee was held at the St. James's School-room. Mr, J. Gordon was voted to the chair. The report of the old committee for the past year was read and adepted, the following being the main features :—The number of pupils for the year ending March 31 was 3037, ami the average attendance 2618, as against 2949 and 2357 the previous year. Four scholarships had been awarded. The committee exceedingly regretted the retirement of Mr. Worthington. The receipts for the year were £638 in 4d, and the expenditure £54717s Hd. Twelve were proposed to form the committee for the ensuing year, the old committee being re-elected, the voting being as follows: -Dr. Kins 50, J. Blades 48, R. Farrell 48, G. Squirrell 44, J. B. Fairs 39. W. Flicker 38, P. Crowe 33, J. T. Julian 36, J. A. Adams 33 (elected). A. Rosser 26, G, Proud 22, Maclean 21. Mr. Blades was elected chairman for the ensuing year, Mr, Adams treasurer. There was but a, small attendance at the meeting. PONBONBY.

The annual meeting of householder* of the above school district was held at the Ponsouby Hall last night. The chair was occupied by Mr. D. B. McDonald, and about 80 householders were present. Mr. W. Leys (chairman of the committee) referred to the work done by the committee during their term of office, and read the annual report, which stated inter alia, that the inspectors' reports bore ample testimony to the efficiency of the schools. The complaints ot overcrowding would, the committee hoped, induce the Board to provide extra accommodation. Reference was also made to the necessity of enlarging the grounds of the Church • street School; to improvements effected at Richmond Road School; the large increase of scholars in the upper standards during the first year in which the school had been under the management of a male teacher ; the equipment of the schools with tho necessary appliances for teaching practical science; the substitution of instruction in cookery and domestic economy for upper standard girls in place of science lessons; the necessity for the Board to amend its regulations so as to prevent headmasters from entering into competition with tradesmen by rntailiui! school books, and to divide the Ponsouby districts into three separate school district; and also to the advisability of holding the elections trienually "instead of annually. The report aud balance-sheet (which showed the receipts to have been £540 6j lid, and expenditure £510 19a 4d, leaving a credit balance of £29 7e 7d) were adopted. The only nominations received were those of the retiring members of committee, viz., Messrs. W. Leys, J. Swales. J. Turner, W. B. Leylanii, W. J. Rees, A. H. Collins, W. Tayior, J. Becroft, and H. E. Hughes, and amidst applause the above were declared duly elected. A vote of thanks tn the chair terminated the proceedings. The committee met subsequently, and elected Mr. W. Leys chairman for the ensuing year. NEWTON.

At Newton there was a large attendance, and Mr. F. Cherry occupied the chair. Mr. J. M. French read the annual report of the outgoing committee, which stated the attendance of members of committee duuring the year. The buildings and grounds were all reported as being in good order, The number of pupils on the roll are as follow :—Newton Eait, 743"4, ivitli an average attendance of O.W'6; Newton West, 600, with an average atiendiiuee nf 503. The total number on the rolls of both schools was 1343*4, with an average attendance of 1153'6 The accounts showed that the receipts for the year had been, including a balance in hand of £4 -I; on April 11, 1896, £256 'is 6d. The expenditure was £2% 19s Sd, leaving a balance in hand of £20 3s Id. Junior district scholarships were awarded to W. B. Cummins and T. B. Wishart, Newton East School, and Francis H. Rowe and J. B. Johnson, Newton West School. Foundation scholarships were awarded to Alice M. Sankey, Newton West School, and Edith Burragh, Newton West School. The reports of the inspectors were of a very satisfactory character regarding both schools. The following were nominated as a committee for the ensuing year : — Messrs. T. W. Freeman. J. D. Gov, ,J. T. Hough, T. MaMaster, W.J. Macdermott, T. H. Maityu, J. Peak, J. Roaaer, H. Thompson, J. Tonkin,.!. M. White. Messrs. J. Jenltin, J. (jrcacen, and A. Atkin were appoiuteii scrutineers. The result was a* follows : -T. H. Martyn 58, J. Roasev 57, W. J. Macdei'inoct 55, T. Alc.Ma.Hter 54, J. Peak 52, J. D. Gow 51, T. W. Freeman 49, H. Thompson 47, J. M. Wliir»4'.,,J. Tonkin 30, J. T. Hough 27. The first nine were declared duly elected. At a mretiii" of the newly-elected committee, Mr, W. J. Macdermott was elected chairman, Mr. Martyn treasurer, and Mr. 3. M. French secretary. It was arranged that committee meetings should be hold at Newton Kast School on the third Monday in each month at half-past seven p.m.

GRAFTON. At the meeting for the election of a school committee for this district held yesterday evening, Mr. W. Beechamp was voted to the chair. The annual report of the committee for the past year showed the average attendnice of children to have been from 465 to 514. At the annual .standard examination 310 passes were obtained out of 357 candidates. Satisfaction was expressed with the manner in which the headmaster, Mr. O. Healy, had performed hie duties. Out of 13 nominations for the committee the following nine were elected:—Messrs. Liver, Boone, Carlaw, Clarkn, Heweou, Hutchinson, Reid, and Patterson. Mr. S. Clarke was subsequently elected chairman of the committee for the seventh time, and Mr. J. W. Boone secretary. PARNELL.

The annual meeting of householders in the Parnell school district, held last night for the purpose of electing the school committee, was presided over by Dr. R. Laishley. The annual report stated that out of 414 children present at the annual examination 291 passed. The receipts for the year amounted to £112 9s, and the expenses were less liy £5 14s Hd. A handsome shield containing a photo ot the school by Mr. W. Davis, one of the teachers, which is to be held quarterly by the class having the best attendance was on view. The election for the new committee resulted in Messrs. Thomas, Pollard, Scott. Tighe, Hill, Bines, and Cozens being returned. At a meeting of the committee held subsequently, Mr. N. W. Pollard was again elected chairman.

MOUNT EDEN. The annual meeting of householders for the election of a committee for the Mount Eden district school, and the reception of the annual report, was held at the schoolhouse, Valley Road, last evening. Mr. W. Gray was voted to the chair. The report of the committee showed that every department of the school had been carried on in a moat satisfactory manner. The attendance during the year has been steadily on the increase, the number of scholars on the roll at present being 647, with an average attendance of 546, as aeainst 551, with an average attendance of 436, in March, 1896. The report of the inspectors wns of a most satisfactory character. The question of further additions to the schools, or the opening of a new school at Edendale to meet growing requirements was discussed, and it was decided, on the motiou of Mr. Edmonds, seconded by Mr. Cooper, that representations be made to the Board of Education urging the necessity for obtaining a site and erecting a school at Edendale. The following gentlemen were elected a committee for the incoming year :-Messr«. E Seabrook. W. Cole, Edmondi, Andrews, Hootoo, W. Gray, Eady, Stevens, and S. Gray, the last named, at a Hubeequent meeting of the new committee, being elected chairman. A vote of thanks to the outgoing committee and the chairman terminated the meeting.

REMOERA. There was a fair attendance of householders at the anuual meeting in the Remuera schoolroom last night, Mr, J. M, Lennox presiding. The report presented was of a satisfactory nature. The number on the roll was 450, the average attendance 371, and the highest attendance 402. The report was adopted. Messrs. T. Finlayson, J. M. Carpenter, Andrew Holden, T. Buddie, W. J. Parker, J. R. Gray, T. J. Ste»le, C. Hanson, and J. M. Lennox, the retiring committee, were reelected. Votes of thanks to the Rev. G. B. Monro, for conducting a Bible-clue, attended by about 100 children, and to Mr. Heron, builder, tor holding a carpentry class on Saturday mornings, were agreed to; m were also rotes of thanks to the retiring committee and the chairman. The committee met immediately afterward*, and elected Mr. Lennox chairnuu, Mr. Ranson treasurer, and Mr. W. Dinnison necretary. MOUNT ALBERT.

The annual meeting of the householders of the Mount Albert school district w»s fairly well attended. Mr. R. E. Ellis presided. The report wai a satisfactory one, and the balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £9 83. The report and statement of accounts were adopted. The following were elected a* the committee for the ensuing year :— Messrs. Martin, Finch, Ellis, Barker, Freeney, Battersby, and McGinn. Mr. W. H.-Martin was elected-chairman ef the committee.

NEWMARKET. The annual meeting of householders of the Newmarket School District was held in the schoolroom list evening. Mr. George Bishop presided. The annual report showed that the work done during the last twelve months was of a satisfactory character. The committee urged ucou the householders to apply for a teacher's residence. The following were elected a committee for the incoming year:—Messrs. Bush, W. Morgan, jun., A. Menzie, Geo. Prince, J. Moore, W. Whymau, William Hill McColl. At a subsequent meeting of the new committee Mr. McColl was elected chairman of committee.

ELLERSLIE. The annual meetiug of householders in the Ellerslie School district, held last night in the school, elected the following as members of the committee:—Messrs. Nolan, Waddeil, McWilliams, Harris, Peek, Board, and Tucker. Mi , . Nolan was chosen chairman when the committee met after the election.

EPSOM. At the annual meeting of householders of the Epsom School District the following commitee was elected '.-Messrs. E. W. Burton (chairman), W. E. Brown (secretary nnd treasurer), S. Hesketh. B. T. Oleseii, G. S. Kidd, A. Worrail, and E. Atkinson. The report presented was a satisfactory one, and the balance-sheet showed a balance in hand cf £11» 7s id. The report and balance-sheet were adopted, and the following resolution war carried :—"That tills meeting desiros to place on record its regret at the removal of Mr. Mclntosh to Onehunga, and its high appreciation of his talents as head-teacher, »ud of his services generally whilst principal ot the Epsom school."

DEVONPORT. There were about 30 householders present at the annual meeting of the Devonport School Committee laat night Mr. Oliver Mays was voted to the chair, and rod the annual reporc, which stated that notwithstanding frequent changes in tho stuff, aud irregular atteudauoe ou the part of a section of the children, excellent progress had been made. There had been a net increase of 50 to the roll, making a totnl of 567, and the average attendance ie now 474, being an nddidon of 40. The report of the inspectors was highly satisfactory. The carpentry class established by the Committee in 1894 still maintains its usefulness. Over 100 boys of varying ages have received instruction in the use of tools during the past two years. Mr. John Harvey, a skilled tradesman, has been appointed instructor in succession to Mr. E. Bartley, who was the chiet promoter of the undertaking, and who conducted it so successfully for tho first 18 mouths at his own cost. The Mini>''-r of Education has authorised payment of a subsidy to the committee towards the future maintenance of the class. During the year just ended three junior scholarships were gained by pupils The report and statement of accounts were adopttd, and a hearty vote of thanks to the retiring committee was carried unanimously. Eleven gentlemen were proposed as members of committee, the following being elected :— Canon Bates, Messrs. E. Bartley, P. H. Mason, 0. Mays, E. Ford, S. C. Macky, G. 1,. Peacocke, J. B. Giltilla.il. aud H. J. Biulfe. The newly-elected committee then met, and Mr. Oliver Mays waa re-elected chairman for the tenth time in succession. A feature of the evening was the exhibition of articles— about 80 in number—made by the boys in the workshop during the past six months. They consisted of step - ladders, music - stands, stools, beaches, knife-boxes, brackets, etc. This display aroused considerable interest, and was much admired. Messrs. E: Bartley aud J. Dunning made the awards to the boys. ONEHUNGA.

Tiie anuml meeting of householders was held last night iu the Onehunga Public School, irheu about 100 persons were present. The mayor (Mr. D. A. Sutherland), occupied the chair. The annual report showed the average attendance of scholars was 456. Hugh Rishworth, and Herbert Lawry had each won a scholarship at the Prince Albert College, and Robin Moody had taken a Foundation Scholarship at the Auckland Grammar School. The inspector's reported that 263 scholars had passed their examination, and the conduct of the school throughout was most satisfactory. The reports were adopted, Some discussion arose as to the validity of Mrs. Yate»' nomination, and the chairman was asked to rule whether that lady was ;i householder according to law. THAMES. The election of School Committee was held last evening with the following results :— Kauaeranjia: Messrs. R. Scott, D-uiby, \V. H. Kitching, McDonald, C. J. Brown, Walton, M. Paull, A. J. Smith, and E. J. Button. P.irawai; Messrs. H. C. Oillespie, Dunlop, J. H. Smith, Smith, Simmonds, Hudson, and West. Waiotahi: Messrs. Radford, Kodce, Reid, Patereon, Duvey, Hastings, Waite, G. White, and W. T. McGregor. Tararu has yet to come to hand. At after meetiugs of the above committees chairmen were elected as follows:—KauaeraiiKa, Mr. M. P»ull; Waiotahi, Mr. T. Radford j Pariwai, Mr. H. C. Gillespie.

PAEROA. The annual meeting of householders took place last evening, when there waa a fair attendance. The chair was occupied by Mr. F. Cock. The report showed that the teaching staff under the careful supervision of Mr. Walter Sullivau, head teacher, were doing excellent work. There was sometimes overcrowding in the school, but the Board of Education could not see its way to grant a further addition. The headmaster reported that the number on the roll was 298. As the accommodation only provides for '245, a regular attendance would overcrowd the school. The financial statement showed that the receipt! were £89 Us 2d, and expenditure £79 2s, leaving a credit balance of £10 9a 2d. The various reports were received and adopted.
