THE GOLDFIELDS.

NEWS FROM THE MINES. [BY TKLKGIU I'll.—OWN' CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Friday. DARWIN. The winze upon No. 1 reef below the Multnm level is being pushed forward with vigour, and at the last breaking down the quartz showed colours of gold. ALBURNIA east. The principal work in progress is stoping and rising upon the Vale of Avoca footwall reef above the main adit level, and the ore coming to hand shows colours of gold.

VICTORIA. The reef in the western drive at the intermediate level, seaward of the Imperial break, is showing considerable improvement, and shows gold very freely, besides having yielded a little picked stone. The reef also looks very well in the eastern drive, and from that point, and from the stopea, an excellent class of crushing dirt is coming to bund. MAY QUEEN EXTENDED. In the Onehunga section the drive eastward upon the lode being followed has latterly been passing through a barren class of country, but this is now giving place to a better description of sandstone, so that an improvement; in the quality of the lode may be looked for at any moment. In the western drive upon the sumo body, very encouraging prospeots are being met with. In the Hokiangu section the drive westward upon the main reef is penetrating a good class of country. The reef is about 'i feet thick, ami looks very well, although no gold has been seen in it yet. Ptlßir CONSOLIDATED. This company is steadily pushing on with the rise upon tiiu upstrike of the Rimti reef, in order to connect No. 2 level with No. 1, and thereby improve the ventilation of both sinking. i'lie reef has widened out to 4 feet, and shows colours of gold at every breaking down, which shows that a good block is being opened up. At No. 1 level a length of about 340 feet is 1 opened up in the line of reef, and '280 feet at No. 2 level. At eaoh of these points colours of gold were seen at nearly every breaking down, with the exception of about SO feet at No. 2 level, where a broken stretch of country was passed through ; but in the face of this level at the present time the reef is assuming large dimensions, and looks very promising, GENERAL MINING ITEMS, An extraordinary general meeting of the King of VVaihi Gold Mini, tig Company will be held on May 17, Other mining notices also appear iu our advertising columns.
