WHAKATANE SPORTS.

The school children's annual sports were held in Mr. Booth's paddocks on Easter Monday, and although the weather had been changeable for gome days previously, that day dawned " aet fair," and continued so throughout the whole of it, There was a great muster of the children, their parent*, and friends. Much interest was taken in an exhibition of pole-jumping by Hoi Ereura, the Australasian record-breaker. The events of the day were divided into two series, one of 13 events for boys, and an equal number of events for thegirls. The races were purely for children, ranging from five to seven years up to fifteen. At the close of the children's sports a tug-of-war took place between Maoris and Europeans, which resulted in favour of the Europeans after a stronglycontested competition. Owing to the shades of evening tailing several of the items on the programme had to be given up, so after the distribution of prizes and cheers for those who had contributed to the youngsters' pleaiure, a general exodus towards Dome took place.—{Own Correspondent.]
