In oonnectioD with Newh&ren's probable visit to England, doubts are expressed resecuring his recognition in the English stud book, previous efforts made by Mr. W. Jones in this direction having failed for want of proof that Ncwhaven's ancestor Dinah was thoroughbred. In view of the difficulty Mr. T. 8. Glibborn, who shortly visits England, will ask the compilers of the stud book to reccognise the principle that all Australian horses whose pedigree l ! are traceable back 40 years be eligible for inclusion.

SYDNEY YEARLING SALES. Sydney, April 20. The animal yearling sales took place at lliimlwiek to-day. Bidding was slow ami prices only fair. Mr. T. Paytou gave 200 guineas for the Splendor—Equation colt, Mr. Cousins 120 guineas for the Splendor—Chorus filly, and Mr. Allan)) 105 guineas for the Splendor—Gamelia colt.

A Bill line been recently introduced in the Missouri Senate prohibiting bookmaking in the State on or off the courses, and the NewYork Spirit of trie Times points out that the passage of such a law will practically kill racing and breeding throughout the State, and will destroy and render valueless about £400.000 worth of racing property there. In the State of Wisconsin, too, a similar Bill has been introduced for the sanction of the legislature, and in Alabama one of a like nature has practically become the law of the land. The last named State, though, does not possess any studs, and racing has never flourished there, so that the adverse legislative action is not likely to have any great effect one way ar the other. The greatest horses of recent times (writes the "Special Commissioner" of the London Sportsman) have all, with the exception of Isinglass, been the foals of mares who could race. Persimmon's dam, Perdita 11., was quite a good mire on the turf, and Isabel (dam of St. Frusquin) was by far the best animal ever sired by Plebean. The dam of Ladas was very sueedy on the turf, and Ormonde's dam Little Agnes was a really first-rate mare over a distance of ground. St. Angela, the dam of St. Simon, did not train on after the early part of her three-year-old career, but she was a good two-year-old, winning a Maiden Plate at the Newmarket Second October Meeting from eleven runners, aud a Handicap Plate at the Houghton Meeting from fifteen runners, which included Speculum and Tibthorpe—for this race the was, however, disqualified. Her only defeats were in first-class company, as. for inntance, when she was behind Green Sleeve. Rosicruomn, Lady Coventry, and Lady Elizabeth for the Middle Park Plate.
