THE STREETS OF AUCKLAND.

TO THE EDITOR. Sib,—l »m not surprised to see the letters signed " J.R." and " Publicua," in to-day'i Herald, re dirty streets. As k visitor to Auckland, I have been much surprised at the 'filthy state of some of the principal streets. But, sir, there is another and worse evil, which requires immediate attention by the proper authorities. Before garbage, etc., is removed from the water-tables, " senm" in the shape of hoodlums, should be removed from the pavements. Street corners, pillar boxes, etc., where there is not much light, are the favourite resorts of tbe3e persons. I have heard the most disgusting language and insulting remarks made to passers by. I have seen young women spoken to and much alarmed, and on one occasion within the last few days actually had to interfere on a young woman's behalf who wa9 accosted in the streets of Parnell by one of these curs. There is certainly something wrong when these people are allowed to behave as they do in a thoroughfare like Parnell, and it is high time the police force was made sufficiently strong to cope with this evil. Should you consider that any good end would be served by giving my address to the police you are at liberty to do so.—l am, etc., visitor. Parnell, April 14,1897.
