MEETINGS.

As extraordinary meeting of shareholders in the" Auckland Gas Company was held on March 30 for the purpose of empowering the directors to obtain further capital, and 8d provide for the rapidly advancing business of fcho company. The chairman, Mr. J. H. Upton, stated that £25,600 would be required within the next tweße months to cope with the demands for extension, to keep up the stock of gas stoves, etc., while further development would have to be looked for in the still further future. At the Annual meeting of the Mannwatu Railway Company, the Chairman said the receipts from traffic had been higher than in any previons year, and from land sales several thousand pounds more wero obtained than in last year. The net profit; from these two sources was £8954 and £1754, out of which £10,200 would bo absorbed by a dividend of six per cent. Dnring the year a number or mortgages were paid off, and receipts from interest consequently reduced. The Company sold 15,593 acres for £13,1G8, mostly hilly pastoral country, and they now had a fund of £37,219 derived from land which could be drawn on for improvement in tho permanent way or in rolling stock if moro were required than could be fairly charged to maintenance. Tho reporb and balancesheet were adopted, Messrs. Anderson, Kirkaldie, and Nathan were re-elected directors, and Mr. E. H. Izard was elected in the place of Mr. C. B. Izard, resigned. The annniU general meeting of the Young Men's Christian Association was held in the Lecture Hull of the rooms, Wellesley and Albert Streets, on March 30. There Was a very good attendance of members present; Mr. J. L. Wilson, president, in the chair. The annual report of the committee, read by the Honorary Secretary (Jit. Thos. Buddie), showed that the operations of the Association during the past) year had been most successful. The election of officers for the ensuing year was then proceeded with, and resulted as follow: — President, Mr. J. L. Wilson; vice-presidents, Right Rev. Bishop Cowie, Revs. F. Larkins, H. bull, R. F. Maonicol, F. Warner, Colonel Haultain, Dr. Knight, Messrs. P. Battley, C. E. Button, M.H.R., R. B. Shalders {executive committee, Messrs. A. Carr, P. E. Cheal, W. R. Wilson, S. Macaulay, Duthie, C. J. Hemery, H. Marler, L. Wilson, Mains, James Wilson, John Stnythe, McClusky, Heriot; lion, secretary, Mr. Thomas Buddie; lion, treasurer, Mr. U. W. Hemery; hon. auditor, Mr. F. Bodle; general secretary, Mr. William Brakeurig.

At the meeting of shareholders of the Union Company lioxt month a new departure will be suggested for tho purpose of giving a pro rata share of profits to the employees as well as to the shareholders. One scheme of which notice has been given is—"To arrange for sharing profits, or some portion thereof, among the employees of the company, or some of them, and to establish and support), or aid in the establishment and support, of associations, institutions, funds, trusts, and conveniences calculated to benefit the employees or ex« employees of the company (or its prcde-> cossors in business), or the dependants of connections of such persons, and to grant pensions and allowances, and to make payments towards insurance, and to subscribe or guarantee money for charitable or benevolent objects, or for any exhibition, oc foe any public, general, or useful object."
