COMMERCIAL.

New Zealand Herald Office, Wednesday evening. These ii do distinguishing feature in trade since our last report, except extreme scarcity of potatoes. It is » short week, acid commercial uewi does not crow like April mushrooms. We therefore comment only on points that itand out prominently, viz., stronger interest shown in the produce market under South Island advices, and to the present position of the mining industry in its effect upon commercial business. The serious nature of the call list is selfevident. No one conversant with the financial strength of scrip holder* M a body can conceive the possibility of any even general response to the calls, and the result can only be waited for with some apprehension of the trade consequences that must follow a large stoppage of mining work almost immediately. The greatest care and discrimination is called for in giving credit; in fact, the financial position is being more regarded than the placement of goods, and trade U governed more largely by risk calculations. The effect of a dry season in Australia is beginning to 'affect New Zealand prices of forage, particularly oats. South Island farmers are slow sellers, and the local market has rapidly advanced to 2s 4d and 2« sd, quotations being nominal, as many Southern holders will not give a quotation in the uncertainty of getting farmers to Bell. Oatmeal was advanced £1 per ton after our last report went to press. The inquiry from Sydney for maize ii also strong. For this cereal we quote, 2s 8d to 2s BJd off wharf, small stocks. Wellington is buying at these figures. Potatoes: In consequence of a large quantity being shut out of the Manapouri, importers could deliver only half their sales, and at the moment there are none In first hands, nor auy expeoted until Monday in the Anglian. These in the existing scarcity will probably be all sold before arrival, as last week's deliveries to north and the goldtield buyers were only enough to tide demand over for a few days. We quote, nominally £5 per ton. Butter: Australia is operating in the local market for this produce. 200 kegs were sold to Sydney, and shipped for Manapouri, Flour: Good nates and deliveries at today's price. _ Bran and sharps; The market is very firm. Wheat: Owing to the downward tendenoy of the English market, the farmers are rushing their wheat into the local mills. Unfortunately, the yield is not up to expectations, owing to the dry season. Fowl wheat is in good demand. In the local produce market the prices are: Best dairy fresh butter sd, second quality 4d, and third quality 3d per pound wholesale. Eggs are Is 3d per dozen wholesale, and Is 6d per dozen retail. KAURI GUM MARKET. The following are the quotations for the kauri ?um market for the week ending April 13, 1897 .— Poor ordinary, which comprises weak and rough-coated pieces, pickings, and washed nuts, £25 to £27. Ordinary, meaning hard, rough-scraped gum, varying in price according to the quantity of washed nuts, £35 to £37. Good ordinary, meaning hard, unpicked range gum, price varying according to size, scraping, and freedom from weak pieces, from £40 and upwards. Bast Coast, £65 to £67. Re-scraped, £88 and upwards. Arrivals for thirteen days in April, 205 tons. lii spite of the small quantity arriving, the market at present remains without iinprovemeut. Orders are on a very small scale, probably being restricted owing to the uncertainty in European affairs. But in spite of all this there is a more hopeful tone among merchants. The production now is less than for many years. The stock in London is gradually lessening, and merchants anticipate that, if peace is maintained, a few months will see an improvement in the gum market, DUNEDIN OATS.
